Perfect Clutch Bag Pattern

ree

Whether you're dressing up for a night out or just want an elegant accessory for daily use, a handmade clutch may be just what you need. In this post, I'll share the written pattern I used to make my perfect clutch bag. I’ll include useful links to the original pattern I modified as well as recommended materials to inspire you on your crafting journey.

Choosing the Right Materials

The first step was selecting quality materials. I wanted something sturdy and stylish at the same time. I chose a solid cotton yarn ideal for a clutch bag that can withstand regular use.

For the handle, I made my own from ceramic and stone beads. This allows me to have removable option so I can style my bag in many different ways.

Designing the Pattern

I found the original pattern I used on Youtube. As I used different materials from the original designer, I had to make modifications to fix the sizing. My written pattern is below, but please reference the original designer for step by step instructions. You can find the video here

Pattern

Materials:

  • Sugar and Cream / Loops and Thread Cotton Yarn - hold two strands together

  • 5.5mm Hook

  • 7.1in Purse Frame

  • Stitch Marker

This pattern is worked in a round, from an oval shape, I’ll refer to the two ends where the increases are as “corners”

Chain 13

Round 1: skip first ch, 3 sc in second ch from hook to create corner 1, sc 10, 3 sc in last ch to create corner 2, sc 10 (26 sts)

Round 2: sc 2 in each of the 3 sc in corner 1, sc 10, sc 2 in each of the 3 sc set of corner 2, sc 10 (32 sts)

Round 3:  (sc in the first st, sc 2 in the next st) 3x in corner 1, sc 10, (sc in the first st, sc 2 in the next st) 3x in corner 2, sc 10 (38 sts)

Round 4: (sc in the first 2 sts, sc 2 in the next st) 3x in corner 1, sc 10, (sc in the first 2 sts, sc 2 in the next st) 3x in corner 2, sc 10 (44sts)

Round 5: 2 sc in each st all the way around (88 sts)

Round 6: sc all the way around, place a stitch marker in last st of this round (88 sts)

Round 7 - 30: repeat round 6 for 23 rows, or however tall you want your bag to be (88 sts)

(optional for row 29, add two d rings to each end of the bag to clip a strap on later)

Round 31: Turn your work so your stitches are facing inside the bag, line up your purse frame and crochet around the frame to attach it to the bag.
